# Human vs machine learning: a reader’s guide

Comparing a child and a trained model can clarify questions about experience, feedback and generalization, but the comparison has limits. How AI Learns uses that contrast as a narrative teaching device. This guide helps readers separate the book’s illustration from claims that require independent developmental or machine-learning evidence.

## Separate the illustration from the mechanism

A child in a story and a model in a technical paper are described at different levels. The child’s behavior is visible, while many internal processes are inferred. A model’s training objective may be specified precisely, yet a deployment result can still be difficult to explain. Comparing them does not establish that their learning mechanisms are equivalent.

## Three questions to carry into the book

1. What counts as an example in each comparison? A page of text and an hour of embodied experience are not interchangeable units.
2. Is the author describing training, inference or a change to the surrounding application? Those are different events.
3. Is a scene illustrating an idea, or presenting evidence for it? Narrative detail is not a citation.

## Choosing the right depth

Read the book sample if your goal is to discuss learning with a parent, teacher or general reader. If your goal is to train a model, choose implementation documentation and reproducible experiments instead. If your goal is an educational intervention, a conceptual analogy does not establish safety, effectiveness or suitability for a particular child.

## Read the book with a comparison log

Make two columns: “claim made” and “evidence needed.” Record which claims are definitions, which are interpretations and which would need empirical support. This preserves the usefulness of the analogy while preventing it from carrying more weight than it can support.

## Read a sample before choosing
